Messi scored twice in his fifth and final World Cup, but France’s Kylian Mbappé scored a stunning hat trick – the first in a final since 1966 – as both superstars brilliantly battled it out on the biggest stage of all.

Messi’s penalty and Angel di Maria’s goal in the first half appeared to have ended the match in regulation time, but Mbappé scored two goals in stoppage time, including one from the penalty spot, to tie the game for France.

Both teams were reeling from the thrilling conclusion when Messi appeared to have scored the game-winning goal in the 108th minute. However, Mbappé once more equalized from the spot to force a shootout.

France’s Kingsley Coman had his penalty saved by Emiliano Martinez, the tournament’s best goalkeeper, and Aurelien Tchouameni had his effort blocked before Montiel secured Argentina’s third World Cup title and first since 1986
